General business information for Canadian licensees as of 2026, not legal advice. Conduct-rule references are to the Federation of Law Societies of Canada Model Code of Professional Conduct as amended April 2024, which every Canadian law society draws its own rules from, so your own regulator's version governs. Search and cost figures are Olanur research from September 2026.

Almost everything written about law firm SEO assumes the first page is a market a firm can enter. So we checked. We took twenty-four of the queries Canadians use when they need a lawyer and worked out what every site on the first page of each one really is.

The first page turned out to be two different markets that a keyword tool prices as one. On the queries where somebody wants to hire a lawyer, law firms hold 25 of the 36 top-three positions. On the queries where somebody is still working out what their problem is, law firms hold 4, and the province, the tribunals and a handful of charities hold the rest. Most law firm SEO budgets are aimed squarely at the second one.

We build the other side of this, and it is better said here than buried at the end. Olanur sends requests from people who have already written down their problem and their city to lawyers whose practice fits. A firm can take the matter without first winning the page it would otherwise spend a year fighting for. What follows stands on its own whether or not a practice ever lists with us.

Law firm SEO in Canada: the quick answer

  • The first page splits in two, and only one half is winnable. Across 240 first-page results, law firms held 77.5% of positions on hire queries and 29.2% on problem queries. The first firm appears at position 1.50 in the first group and 6.00 in the second.
  • The advertising market agrees, independently. Problem queries run $0.28 to $3.08 CAD a click, hire queries $4.76 to $35.92, and the two bands never overlap.
  • No agency can promise the outcome. Google says "no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google", and that if an SEO guarantees first place, "find someone else".
  • The superlative that ranks is one a licensee cannot write. Commentary to rule 4.2-1 of the Model Code of Professional Conduct names "suggesting qualitative superiority to other lawyers" as marketing that may contravene it. A ranking site appeared in 11 of our 12 hire results, and none of them is bound by that rule.
  • One widely sold tactic stopped existing this year. Google dropped the FAQ rich result on 7 May 2026 and removed its documentation on 17 June. The old page now redirects to the entry recording its own removal.
  • Being findable and being available are different decisions. Winning a hire query means displacing a firm already paying to hold it. Olanur routes described requests to practices that fit them, and is free for lawyers during early access.

We counted who holds page one, rather than assuming

We looked at twenty-four queries, twelve of the form [practice] lawyer [city] and twelve of the form a person types when something has gone wrong, and identified every site on the first page of Canadian results for each.

Who already holds the first page of Canadian legal search

Twenty-four queries, the first page of Canadian results for each, 240 positions in all. Each square is one position, coloured by what the site behind it is. Olanur research, September 2026. Ordinary results only, so ads, the local map pack and AI Overviews sit above everything shown here.

The twelve “I want to hire someone” queries

A law firm holds 25 of the 36 top-three positions. The first firm appears at position 1.50 on average.

The twelve “what do I do about this” queries

A law firm holds 4 of the 36 top-three positions. The first firm appears at position 6.00 on average.

  • Forums, reference and trade media93.8%
  • Law societies and bar associations83.3%

156 different sites hold the 240 positions, and the largest single one, ontario.ca, holds 14 of them.

These are the ordinary results only, so ads, the map pack and the AI Overview all sit above what is shown here.

The fragmentation is the first surprise. 156 different sites hold the 240 positions, and the largest single one, ontario.ca, holds 14. There is no incumbent to displace. There is a crowd.

On problem queries, government, courts and tribunals hold 37 of 120 positions and 22 of the 36 top-three slots. They are not measuring conversions and they are not going anywhere.

Query by query it gets worse. On how to evict a tenant in ontario no law firm appears in the top ten at all. On power of attorney ontario the first one sits at 8. On tenant rights ontario, which our own guide to tenant rights targets, the first firm is at 10, below the fold and below whatever the AI Overview has already said.

This is not a failure of anyone's search marketing. It is Google's guidance on helpful content applied honestly, because "who created this" has an obvious answer when the page explaining a tribunal's notice periods is published by that tribunal.

The read is not "never write about the law". Our guide to eviction notices and our landlord and tenant pillar both earn their traffic on the long tail. It is that a page aimed at the head of a problem query competes for position 4 at best, and the budget should be sized for position 4.

None of those matters stop existing because a firm cannot rank for them. The tenant handed an eviction notice on Friday still needs somebody this month, and will find somebody. The question is whether a practice can take that work now or is still waiting for a page to climb.

Your second competitor is funded to answer the question

Legal aid, clinics and legal-information charities hold 28 of 120 positions on problem queries and 6 of the 36 top-three slots: Steps to Justice, CLEO, the Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario, Legal Aid Ontario and the Landlord's Self-Help Centre.

Their funding is the point. A clinic publishing a plain-language answer has no conversion step after it, no fee to protect and no reason to hold anything back. A firm writing the same page carries a call to action, a retainer conversation and a practice area it wants to sell, and it usually shows.

The honest options are narrow: go deeper than a charity can afford to, go more local than a provincial charity ever will, or accept the middle of page one. We would add a fourth, which is to stop writing that page and write the one in the next section instead. Search is only one of the routes these readers use anyway, as our guide to the lawyer referral service in Ontario sets out.

On hire queries, the page is almost entirely other firms

Here the picture inverts. Law firms hold 93 of 120 positions, the first appears at 1.50 on average, and eight of the twelve queries have a firm at position 1.

What one click costs in Canadian dollars, by who is doing the searching

Every mark is one query, priced in Canadian dollars. Olanur research, September 2026. Cost per click is what advertisers bid, so it is a reading of what each click is worth to somebody, not a quote for what a firm would pay.

$0$6$12$18$24$30$36

The shaded column is the $3.08 to $4.76 band. Not one of the 24 queries in this census is priced inside it.

The two client-side lanes do not overlap anywhere. The dearest query a person with a problem types costs $3.08 a click. The cheapest query a person ready to hire types costs $4.76. The lane a lawyer searches sits with the second group, and its most expensive term costs 31 times the first group's most familiar one.

Two queries are missing from the chart because no cost data came back for them: child support ontario and criminal lawyer toronto. A reported zero is missing data, not a free click, so neither is plotted at the origin.

Say you run a three-lawyer employment practice in Hamilton. severance pay ontario gets 3,600 searches a month at $1.08 a click, and our own page on severance entitlement is not in its top ten either. employment lawyer hamilton gets 590 at $6.31, nearly six times more, with law firms at two, three and four. One is a crowded provincial answer page with your article beneath it. The other is a page you could hold, in a city where the caller is already reaching for the phone.

It runs the same way for a sole practitioner doing closings in Mississauga. On real estate lawyer mississauga, 1,000 searches a month at difficulty 25, a firm holds position 1 and the only non-firm results on the page are a ranking site at 2 and the Law Society at 7. That is about as open as Canadian legal search gets.

A small professional office on a Canadian main street at blue hour in winter, warm lamplight and bookshelves visible through the window, fresh snow on the sidewalk and a passer-by blurred by motion

The map listings are ranked separately, and Google states the factors openly: "local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity", the third being prominence, which it ties to how many sites link to a business and how many reviews it has. Distance cannot be changed. The other two can, which is what a local page and a complete Business Profile are working on, and it is the thinking behind our own city pages for employment lawyers in Hamilton and real estate lawyers in Mississauga.

Now read that back as a schedule. A page for every city you serve. A profile kept current. Reviews that arrive slowly and only if you ask. Links you cannot place yourself. A competitor doing all of it on the same query in the same month. That work is winnable, and it is still a year of it with no date attached, which is the part that rarely appears in a law firm SEO proposal.

The other option is to stop competing for the query and take the matter directly. Someone in that city describes what has happened to them, and the request goes to a practice that has done none of the above. That is what Olanur does for lawyers, and during early access it costs nothing.

The superlative that ranks is one you cannot write

A ranking site appeared in 11 of our 12 hire results, never at position one and never in a problem result. The Law Society of Ontario appeared in 6 of 12. Neither sells legal services, which is precisely why they rank.

Rule 4.2-1 of the Model Code requires marketing to be "demonstrably true, accurate and verifiable", and its commentary lists "suggesting qualitative superiority to other lawyers" among the examples that may contravene it. So "Best Family Lawyers in Toronto" is not a page a licensee is well placed to publish, and the market has noticed: the sites publishing it are not licensees.

On immigration lawyer toronto, position 6 is held by a page titled "Best Immigration Lawyers in Toronto 2026", hosted on a domain whose own home page is a reference site about United Nations Security Council resolutions. Google's spam policies describe that shape as "third-party content published on a host site mainly because of that host's already-established ranking signals". We make no finding about that page, only that the shape appeared once in a sample of twelve.

Being listed on somebody else's ranking page is not neutral either. The Law Society of Alberta's guidance is direct: "ultimately, you are responsible for how you are described by a referral or a matching service", and such a service "should not purport to rank or rate its subscribing lawyers, nor state they are the best in their practice area". Ontario's own Rules of Professional Conduct are not served in a form we can quote here, so that one is attributed to Alberta. Our pillar on law firm marketing covers the specialist restriction and the rest.

What a click is worth says the same thing twice

The first page shows the boundary by who holds it. The advertising market shows the same boundary by price.

Who is searchingWhat they typeCost per click, CAD
Someone working out what their problem isseverance pay ontario, tenant rights ontario$0.28 – $3.08
Someone who has decided to hireemployment lawyer hamilton, family lawyer toronto$4.76 – $35.92
A lawyer shopping for search marketinglaw firm seo, seo for lawyers$15.82 – $33.85

Olanur research, September 2026. Figures are in Canadian dollars. Two queries returned no cost data and are excluded rather than shown as free.

The third row is the one worth sitting with. A click from someone searching severance pay ontario costs $1.08. A click from a lawyer searching seo for lawyers costs $33.85, thirty-one times more. On the queries this article is written for, the lawyer reading is the expensive one, which is worth knowing before taking anybody's advice about lawyer seo, ours included. For cost by practice area, our breakdown of online legal marketplaces charts nine Toronto head terms.

What none of those prices buy is a client. They buy one visit from someone who may or may not have a matter, be in your city, or call. That gap between a paid click and a described matter is why Olanur exists for lawyers.

What happens while a firm waits for its rankings

A page aimed at a winnable query still takes months to climb it, and nobody will say how many. People with legal problems do not wait for that.

They search this week and contact whichever practice they can find this week. Every one of those matters goes to somebody who was findable on the day they went looking, which is the real cost of a slow channel and never appears on an invoice.

Our own visibility has grown steadily over the past year, and the requests that come with it arrive scoped, from people who have said what happened and where they are. A practice listed with us can be matched to them. One that is not listed cannot be, whatever its rankings look like six months from now. Being available to the demand is a different decision from competing for it, and a firm can make it this afternoon.

The tactic firms paid for until it stopped existing

Some of what a firm is sold does not survive contact with Google's own changelog.

Firms were sold FAQ schema as a ranking tactic for years. Google stopped showing the FAQ rich result on 7 May 2026 and removed the documentation for it on 17 June, and the old URL now redirects to the entry recording its own removal. Before that it had already been restricted to "well-known, authoritative government and health websites", which is to say the sites already holding the top of every problem query.

The same caution applies to what is being sold for AI search now. Google's guidance on its AI features says there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary", and no special files or structured data either. Our guides to AI and legal technology in Canada and AI for Canadian lawyers take the tools more seriously than the file formats.

What an agency can honestly promise

Google answers this directly. Its guidance on hiring an SEO says that if one guarantees first place, "find someone else", and that Google "doesn't evaluate or endorse third-party SEO tools, and these tools don't have access to Google's internal ranking data". Worth remembering when a proposal arrives built on a tool's difficulty score.

Two questions separate a useful law firm SEO proposal from an expensive one. Which query class is the budget aimed at, and if the answer is a list of problem queries, what position is realistically available given who holds the top three? And what happens after the click, since a ranking that lands on a page with no intake path is a cost rather than a result, which our piece on client intake and lead quality covers.

The one position on this page you do not have to take from somebody else

Everything above is a cost carried before a client exists. The click is paid for whether or not anyone calls. The content programme is paid for months before it ranks, if it ranks, and nobody can promise where it lands. On the winnable half of the market, more than three quarters of the positions are already held by another firm paying to keep one.

Olanur is built against that arithmetic. Someone sets out their problem, their practice area and their city, and the request goes to lawyers on our platform whose practice fits. What lands is what a won hire query would have produced, except that nothing had to be won to get it. No ranking, nobody displaced, and it runs alongside a firm's own search work rather than in place of it. Our guide to AI legal lead generation covers the routing, and our piece on client intake and lead quality what happens after.

Olanur is free for lawyers during early access. No fee of any kind at the moment, and if that changes we will publish it before it takes effect. A practice can list itself for matched client requests and see what comes in before committing a search budget for the quarter.

Two things we will not claim. We are not selling rankings: we measured how hard they are to take and built the other thing instead. And our match percentage measures how well a request fits a practice area, not how good the lawyer is, which the Law Society of Alberta's guidance treats as the line between describing a fit and claiming superiority. What goes into ours is set out in our note on how match percentage works.

Frequently asked questions

It depends entirely on which queries the work is aimed at, and law firm SEO is usually sold without that distinction. Hire queries such as real estate lawyer mississauga are held by law firms 77.5% of the time and are realistically winnable. Problem queries such as tenant rights ontario are held at the top by government and charities, where a firm competes for position 4 at best. The same budget produces very different returns across the two.

They are ranked by different systems. The ordinary results are what this article measured. The map listings are separate, and Google states they are "mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity", with the third explained as prominence, including how many sites link to a business and how many reviews it has. Distance cannot be changed, which is why a firm with several offices usually needs a page and a profile for each.

The Model Code of Professional Conduct requires marketing to be demonstrably true, accurate and verifiable, and its commentary to rule 4.2-1 lists "suggesting qualitative superiority to other lawyers" as an example that may contravene the rule. A lawyer also cannot advertise as a specialist without certification. Describing areas of practice, and experience in them, is permitted where it is accurate. Your own law society's rules govern.

Not as a rich result. Google stopped showing it on 7 May 2026 and removed the documentation on 17 June, having already limited it to well-known authoritative government and health sites. Clear questions and answers still help readers and can still be quoted by AI features, but the search result they were sold for is gone.

Nobody can give a reliable number, and Google's advice is to ask an SEO what results they expect and in what timeframe rather than accept a guarantee. From our own publishing, visibility arrives well before clicks do, so a programme judged on impressions can look successful for months before it produces a single client.

The cheapest available win in law firm SEO is usually the hire query for the practice area and city the firm already serves, because that page competes almost only against other firms. A complete Business Profile, one genuinely local page, and a working intake path will do more than a content programme aimed at queries the province already answers. The faster option costs nothing at all: list the practice on Olanur and take the requests while the rest matures.

The decision here is not really which law firm SEO proposal to accept. It is which half of the market a practice is trying to reach, and whether it would rather spend a year competing for a position that a competitor is already paying to hold, or be available to the people searching for a lawyer this week.

Search is worth doing on the queries a firm can realistically win, and this article is meant to help pick those. It is simply slow, unguaranteed and paid for well in advance. If a practice has room on the calendar this quarter and would rather not wait out that cycle, the shorter route is to let scoped requests come to it: list your practice on Olanur, free during early access, and judge it on what arrives rather than on anything we have written here.
